    Orthodontic MythBusters

    Course Description

The course covers the evolution of orthodontic appliances and some of the notable “claims” that these appliance systems advocate, mechanical changes to the bony anatomy and their influence on the rate of tooth movement, intraoral scanning and aligner therapy. The attendee will be exposed to the advertisement of new appliance systems and the evidence-based research reality of these treatment modalities. The entry of orthodontic treatment into the retail shopping arena in the United States is discussed as well as the emergence of clandestine orthodontic providers not licensed by any governing entity. The presentation is ended by the detailed description and observation of a significantly difficult case treated with principles backed by evidence-based orthodontics.

    Educational Objectives

    1. Develop an understanding of how evidence-based orthodontics and dentistry in general has come to the forefront of educational programs.

    2. Learn how to develop a skeptical eye when evaluating information about advertising claims that permeate the orthodontic industry.

    3. Attendees will be presented with scientific principles of tooth movement and how some of the new products in the market neglect some of the scientifically and time-proven principles.

    4. Course participants will be able to be able to offer patients knowledgeable advice on the use of some of the new products in the orthodontic arena.
